Schaub Lorenz LCD-TV in Australia

Feb 2007 update - HCC

An old name in Europe. Good marketing in Australia Schaub Lorenz sounds a tad more up-market and expensive than viewell Korea.

Schaub-Lorenz

Schaub-Lorenz 9312 "Golf-Luxus" Tube Portable (1957) valve radio for example. Schaub company is German, founded in 1923 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. In 1940, Schaub joined the C. Lorenz AG, and after mid-1955, their products were called Schaub-Lorenz later Standard Elektrik Lorenz.

In Australia Victorian based company International Dynamics import the swanky sounding double surname branded LCD TV range. International Dynamics sell direct to the public (Encel stores) and trade. This is not always the best arrangement for retailers that have to compete with the importer, they are bound by what can be double standards for example their stores can (by accident or omission) put a special offer out to press and tell you about it later, so as a reseller the first you know about it could be from a client telling you "But Encel are selling the same model for.."

"I've always maintained that there is a major conflict of interest when the importer also owns a retail outlet (with the exception of Duratone). I've contacted the Department of Fair Trading on this one and even though they agree with me in principal apparently it's such a grey area that it could cost me money to pursue the matter and quite frankly, it's not worth it." The Schaub-Lorenz brand was sold In 1996 by Nokia when they Announced Final Sale of its Television Manufacturing Business to Semi-Tech. Semi-Tech Corporation of Toronto is a holding company that owns shares in Semi-Tech (Global) of Hong Kong. They have a record of buying under performing name brands and turning their fortunes around as in the case of Singer sewing machines.

The sale agreement included the rights to use of Nokia´s television and video-recording related technology, the brand rights for Finlux, Luxor, Salora, Schaub-Lorenz and Oceanic, and the right to use the brand name Nokia in televisions and VCRs based on Nokia technology until the end of 1999. The final agreement also includes Nokia´s international television sales activities in Europe and Nokia´s television related R&D center in Bochum, Germany. The Schaub-Lorenz brand/name is used by many other companies throughout the world possibly because of the hard to enforce double surname for example:-

Sharp LCD can't keep up with demand

"..This was the first quarter Sharp was not No. 1 worldwide in LCD TV units and revenues since the inception of the LCD TV market,” the report states. “A lack of capacity growth and insufficient external sourcing prevented it from keeping up with market demand. As a result, while it remained No. 1 in Japan on a unit basis, it fell from No. 2 to No. 3 in North America and from No. 3 to No. 5 in Europe.."
